The New Orleans Saints missed the playoffs last year for the first time in a while, and the reaction by the front office wasn’t to take it easy and wait for next year — instead they blew up the roster.
Pierre Thomas is gone, Kenny Stills is gone and most notably Jimmy Graham is gone.
As a result, the Saints have major holes to fill with the window of the Drew Brees era closing fast. The blowing up of the roster has resulted in a slew of draft picks though, including a pair of first-rounders that will prove to be valuable on draft night.
Last year, Mike Mayock had the New Orleans Saints selecting Kelvin Benjamin with the No. 27 overall pick but that didn’t end up happening. Instead, the Saints traded up to the No. 21 overall slot and drafted Brandin Cooks — which made Mayock half right.
This year, the Saints have two first round picks — the No. 13 and No. 30 overall picks. Mayock has the Saints selecting defensive end Vic Beasley with their first selection.
Of course, New Orleans could always trade these picks or package them to move up, but given the holes on their roster, they need young talent. Having two first-round picks is a luxury and the Saints would be wise to listen to Mayock and his suggestions on who to take.
