The New York Giants have eight picks in the 2015 draft. Here is the list.

For quite a long time it was assumed that Giants general manager Jerry Reese was one of the best drafting general managers. But lately it has been recognized that many of his draft picks have ended up being guys who are regularly hurt.

Whether it’s really fair or not to blame Reese for that is open to debate. One thing is sure, though, Reese and the New York Giants need a good draft in 2015, as they’ve fallen off a bit of late in the talent department, to the point they’ve relied, at least slightly, more on free agency.

Getting back to a point where the Giants can trust themselves drafting college players would be a good start toward regaining “Big Blue’s” pedigree as one of the best franchises in the league.

With eight picks in this draft, the Giants are afforded the opportunity to take a gamble or two. But they still need to be smart. One thing that’s tended to characterize their efforts in the draft in the past is taking the best player available.

There is really no reason for them to move away from that strategy. While they are certainly not a bad football team, nor a roster devoid of talent, there are more than enough spots on their roster which could use improvement that doing anything other than staying put at No. 9 to take the best player available seems unwise.

They do need young talent and depth to fill out their entire roster, at almost every spot on the field. Even with Odell Beckham, Jr. becoming a phenom in his first professional season, the Giants could use another playmaker to pair with him (and that remains true even should Victor Cruz return to his 2011-13 form).

But they could use help in enough areas that they need not force a pick.

Here are the eight picks the Giants hold in this weekend’s draft, which begins Thursday evening.
