Billy Corgan is best known as the singer for the 90’s alternative rock band, The Smashing Pumpkins. Those who know the Pumpkins know Corgan for his signature voice as well as his guitar playing prowess. What many do not know, however, is that Corgan is a die-hard wrestling fan. Corgan has experience in the wrestling world, having founded his own wrestling program Resistance Pro. Billy Corgan is now taking his love for wrestling and signing on to the TNA Wrestling creative team.
Corgan will be the senior producer of creative talent for the TNA Impact creative team. Corgan will help develop characters and story lines within the TNA universe. Corgan will go into the TNA with plenty of talent to work with including Matt and Jeff Hardy, Kurt Angle, Tigre Uno, DJ Z, and more.
It seems as if Corgan is really looking to turn the wrestling game on its head. In a recent interview, Corgan alluded to exploring race and transgender issues saying, “There are ways to explore those themes in ways that are productive, create new stars and show that value-based ‘babyfaces,’ no matter what their background, no matter where they come from, can draw new audiences and inspire people in new ways.”
This would be new territory for professional wrestling and would be a breath of fresh air in a world where story lines simply revolve around “good” and “bad” characters.
TNA Wrestling is the second-leading wrestling promotion behind the WWE. This recent hire by TNA is definitely a move to try and make the TNA name stand out from the WWE. They know Corgan is passionate about wrestling and they are hoping he can bring something new to the table.
Corgan is known for his wild ideas. In 2009, Corgan announced his plans to release a 44-track concept album titled, Teagarden by Kaleidyscope. The 44 songs were released for free one at a time on the internet. It was something no one else had done before and it truly was revolutionary.
If Corgan brings this kind of thinking to TNA then maybe they will be able to finally remove themselves from the shadow of the WWE and into the wrestling limelight. Corgan will no doubt bring some interesting and unique ideas to the world of TNA wrestling.
