The NFL Draft was supposed to feature a slew of trades, but it took until the 15th overall pick for the first trade to happen.

The San Diego Chargers were the first team to make a trade on Thursday night in the NFL Draft, and they ended up giving the San Francisco 49ers three picks to move up two spots to help make some history. After the St. Louis Rams shocked us all and took Todd Gurley with the No. 10 overall pick, the Chargers moved up to take the other top running back in the draft.

By way of the San Francisco 49ers, who collected some more picks for their hand in all of this, the San Diego Chargers selected Melvin Gordon out of Wisconsin to be their franchise running back.

The Chargers getting Melvin Gordon means that they finally have the running back they’ve been searching for since they let LaDanian Tomlinson go back at the end of the 2000s. That was the last franchise running back the Chargers had, and their initial replacement for him is now with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Ryan Mathews didn’t pan out, and that’s the last time the Chargers took a running back in the first round and swung for the fences. Melvin Gordon has some tread already worn off his tires, but h’s a guy that the Chargers believe can change the franchise’s fortune.
