Five NFL Teams That Should Trade for Philip Rivers
By Daniel Tran
Cleveland Browns
Much like the Washington Redskins situation, the Cleveland Cavaliers are cursed with quarterbacks that they no longer want. Bryan Hoyer lost all credibility when the coaching staff abandoned him midseason, and the Johnny Manziel experiment has been a disaster so far.
So they have two options: ride it out and hope one of them miraculously develops into a serviceable quarterback, or move one of them. With the San Diego Chargers all of sudden looking to trade Philip Rivers, there is no reason to get shy about picking up the phone and inquiring about how much the Chargers want a marketable gunslinger like Johnny Manziel, who happened to train in San Diego in preparation for the NFL season last year.
In terms of draft picks, the Browns don’t have anything to offer as they hold the 12th overall pick, where the likelihood of Mariota falling there is right in line with the chances of the Dalai Lama being allowed back into Tibet by the end of the summer. But in terms of promising players, Johnny Manziel provides that, albeit at a high risk.
Manziel has apparently seen the error of his ways and checked himself into a treatment center so he can recover and be a better person, teammate, and friend. This glimmer of hope that Manziel can become that exciting “Johnny Football” type player on the field without the off-field distractions may be enough to convince teams to take him on in exchange for an aging veteran quarterback.
The Browns may have lost Josh Gordon to a lengthy suspension and Jordan Cameron has left, but if they were able to get Philip Rivers, a man with a history of making unknown receivers better, it could turn the franchise around.
