With the fifth pick in the 2015 NFL Draft the Washington Redskins drafted Iowa offensive lineman Brandon Scherff.

The Washington Redskins were a tough team to peg for a specific player with their first round pick. Leading up to the draft, the team could have gone with a pass-rushing defensive end like Dante Fowler Jr. or arguably the best player in the entire draft in defensive end Leonard Williams.

Then there were the two receivers Amari Cooper and Kevin White who would make sense and give Robert Griffin III another weapon to help him recapture the form he showed as a rookie. Along those same lines, Washington could have pursued Iowa offensive lineman Brandon Scherff to protect Griffin.

Even as early as a week ago it looked like they could be in the market for Shane Ray before an injured toe and a marijuana citation squashed that thought.

When Washington was on the clock with the No. 5 pick they saw Fowler and Cooper taken in the two picks before them which made it look like Williams would be a no-brainer, but they elected to take the physical, nasty road grader in Iowa’s Scherff at No. 5.

He played left tackle for the Hawkeyes but his future may be inside at guard where he has Pro Bowl potential and could be this year’s version of Zack Martin who was a tackle at Notre Dame but shifted to left guard with the Dallas Cowboys and made the Pro Bowl as a rookie.

Scherff isn’t automatically locked in to play guard and he could be a right tackle but left tackle is out of the question with Pro Bowler Trent Williams on the blind side.

Do you like the pick Washington fans? Would you have preferred Williams or another player?
