NFL Draft Rumors: Saints high on QB Bryce Petty?
By Mike Dyce
Could the New Orleans Saints consider drafting a quarterback to replace Drew Brees in the first-round?
It looks like the New Orleans Saints are starting to think about the post-Drew Brees era after a couple of less than spectacular seasons. According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel’s latest mock draft, the Saints are pretty found of Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty.
From the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel:
"The Saints worked out Petty in the last week and regard him as the best pure passer in the draft. Drew Brees, 36, will enter his 15th season. Petty has time to learn how to make reads and play from under center without having to play."
You might be thinking that Milwaukee is a pretty bizarre place to be getting insider information about New Orleans, but don’t discard it quite yet. This mock draft comes from Bob McGinn, one of the most plugged-in draft reporters working today.
It is also worth noting that he has the Saints taking Petty with the No. 31 overall pick, the one they acquired from the Seattle Seahawks in the trade for tight end Jimmy Graham. So this isn’t his pick for them with the 13th overall selection.
Defense is the Saints’ biggest need is defense, and a run-stopping defense specifically. McGinn has the Saints drafting Washington defensive tackle Danny Shelton with at 13, so that need will be addressed.
But when you think about it in terms of practicality and common sense, the Saints drafting a quarterback makes sense. Bryce Petty in the first round seems like a bit of a stretch, they might be able to get him 13 picks later at No. 44 in the second round.
