The NFL Draft is right around the corner, and the New Orleans Saints could be drafting Drew Brees’ eventual replacement tonight.

The New Orleans Saints blew up their roster this offseason in shocking fashion, and the shocks may not be finished coming in on the Bayou.
New Orleans already has a franchise quarterback in Drew Brees, who is entering the twilight of his career but is nowhere near being done yet. That doesn’t mean New Orleans won’t think about drafting his eventual replacement and letting him be an understudy Brees over the next few years.
That guy is increasingly looking like Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty.
According to ESPN.com’s Mike Triplett, Saints general manager Mickey Loomis is interested in taking a quarterback this year and that could end up being Bryce Petty.
"“That’s a good question,” Loomis said. “I think you’re always looking to get a young quarterback in the program. We’ve got one in Ryan Griffin that we like. And if an opportunity presents itself, hey, we may take another one here. But I don’t see the end for Drew Brees on the short-term horizon. At least I certainly hope not. But it does take time for these quarterbacks to develop. And we’re conscious of that. We evaluate the quarterbacks. And obviously if an opportunity presents itself to take one at the right time, we’re not afraid to do that.”"
Loomis didn’t mention specifically that the team is interested in taking Bryce Petty but the idea that they could take him is out there and Charles Robinson from Yahoo! Sports sees that as being a possibility.
It’s not outside the realm of possibility that the Saints draft Petty, as they own the No. 31 pick in the draft and could sneak in and take Petty at the end of the night. They could also trade back with the Tampa Bay buccaneers or another team looking to get back into the first-round before the night is over, but taking Petty is very possible at the No. 31 overall pick.
The Packers drafted Aaron Rodgers in 2005 with Brett Favre still leading the team to the playoffs, and a change of the guard didn’t happen until 2008. That put Rodgers on the bench and playing behind Favre for three years and it has crafted him into a Super Bowl winning MVP quarterback.
That’s what could be in the future for Petty, although nothing is promised in the NFL. New Orleans is a team to watch though as someone always takes a quarterback in the first round who maybe should have been a second round pick and the Saints might not be able to wait to get Petty.
