Cincinnati Reds pitcher Homer Bailey’s season is over as the pitcher needs the dreaded Tommy John surgery on his elbow.

The Cincinnati Reds and Homer Bailey have received some bad news.

More from Cincinnati Reds

The right-hander, who is in the second year of a six-year $105 million contract, needs Tommy John surgery on his elbow and his 2015 season effectively is coming to an end.

Bailey was only able to make two starts this season and neither performance was exactly memorable.

In 2014 his season came to an early end when the team shut him down because of the issues he was having his arm. He’s only made 30 starts twice in his career, during the 2012 and 2013 season.

When Bailey is healthy, he is one of the better pitchers in baseball.

He has a career record of 58-51 and has thrown an incredible two no-hitters in his career.

No doubt about it, this is absolutely concerning for the Reds. Bailey has struggled to stay healthy his entire career and the team still owes him five years of his contract.

The team announced that the elbow injury is not related to the arm injury that shut him down last season.

"“After consulting with (team medical director) Dr. Kremchek and other orthopaedic surgeons, we determined the best option with the most predictable outcome is to surgically repair the ligament,” general manager Walt Jocketty said. “It does not appear the injury is at all related to the right elbow flexor mass injury Homer sustained late last season.”"

According to the Reds, they expect him to return during the 2016 season.

The good news for Bailey is that he turns just 29 on Sunday, and he will have plenty of career left before him when he returns. However, prior injuries are certainly concerning and one has to wonder if he can regain the form that he had during the 2012-2013 seasons.

The Cincinnati Reds are looking to get back to the postseason after getting their and falling short just a couple of years ago. Not having Bailey makes it even tougher for them. The dreaded torn UCL has claimed another pitcher in the majors.

Last week it was Brandon McCarthy of the Dodgers. This week it was Homer Bailey.
