Bernardrick McKinney grew up in tiny Tunica, Mississippi, a town of less than 1,500 people. Asked if he preferred McDonald’s, Burger King or Wendy’s, McKinney replied “we only had a McDonalds.”

Plenty of food options are on the plate now for McKinney that he is a Houston Texan. The Texans traded up eight spot to get McKinney which made him proud.

“It’s a great honor, man. I was just waiting, to be honest, just waiting to hear my name get called. It’s been a dream come true,” McKinney said.

McKinney was emotional when his name was finally called after sitting through the first round and having to go back to the hotel and wait another day. McKinney’s mother smeared makeup all over his shirt, which brought McKinney to tears.

At Mississippi State, McKinney was taught to be a leader from day one. When asked to describe his playing style, McKinney say he plays with “juice” and loves to “fly around and have fun.” He started every game and led the team in tackles in both 2014 and 2013. McKinney was also first-team All-SEC and second-team All-American in 2014.

Back in high school, McKinney was a quarterback as well only eating at McDonalds. He threw 15 touchdown passes, rushed for seven more to go along with 34 tackles. He was also the team’s punter so Bill O’Brien has added depth in the Texans special teams.
