Philip Rivers won’t be traded by the San Diego Chargers so does that mean the two parties are ready to open contract talks?

The San Diego Chargers are on record as saying they plan to have Philip Rivers be their starting quarterback well into the future and aren’t interested in trading him despite his contract coming to an end at the end of the 2015 season.

Rivers previously said he wasn’t interested in signing a contract extension with the franchise potentially moving to Los Angeles and the prospect of moving his family wasn’t something he wanted to entertain. Rivers and his wife are pregnant with the couple’s eighth child.

With so much uncertainty revolving around the franchise and where they’ll be playing their home games in the future and his family growing, Rivers sounds like he has taken a different stance about his contract and doesn’t sound opposed to the idea of signing an extension at some point before the end of the year.

“A lot of moving parts and lots to think about,” Rivers said, via Kevin Acee of U-T San Diego. “Location, family, team … All I can say at this point regarding an extension is I’m willing to listen to anything. I’m also willing to play it out. I’m just fired up to be the Chargers QB in 2015.”

So just like the non-committal words we’ve heard from general managers and coaches during the NFL Draft, Rivers is open to listening to any contract offers if something lucrative is presented to he and his agent, but he’s also willing to play out the year and see what happens in the spring of 2016.

Rivers, 33, strikes me as the type of player who isn’t going to hold out for every last dollar and he also strikes me as the type of person who won’t hang on and play in the NFL until he’s as old as Warren Moon and I think he’ll listen to his wife and children before making any concrete decisions.

Perhaps he signs a deal to remain in San Diego for three or four more years if he’s assured the team won’t move to San Diego or perhaps he’ll simply retire if they are moving to L.A. and spend time with his large family.

Either of those moves wouldn’t be surprising to me, but his willingness to listen to the Chargers about a new contract is certainly good news for the Chargers and their fans who hope to lock up their quarterback who has started every game for the last nine years of his 11-year tenure in the NFL.
