The Oakland Raiders poked fun at their rival across the bay with a fake uniform reveal on Twitter

The San Francisco 49ers revealed their first ever alternate uniforms yesterday. The 49ers new uniforms have received mixed reviews from fans. The red, white, and gold is iconic and so thoroughly associated with the 49ers franchise. The alternate is black with red lettering and red stripes, but it’s mostly black, and they are pretty similar to their no-contact QB jersey. There’s a team across the bay that’s known for wearing black and their Twitter account had some fun with the reveal.

The Oakland Raiders tweeted that they were going to be honoring the 50th anniversary of the Super Bowl with gold alternates. For the 50th anniversary of the Super Bowl the NFL is putting gold everywhere and so the Raiders potentially using gold in their alternates was actually slightly, if only slightly, plausible.

The uniforms, looking nothing like the Raiders, incurred the ire of some of their fans that didn’t recognize the sarcasm pointed the 49ers direction. Angry fans tweeted things like, “DON’T DO THIS,” “RAIDERS WTF?,” and simply “No.” After having their fun with the fans the Raiders tweeted that they were just kidding and the Raiders are black and silver forever.

Despite only playing each other every four years there is a strong Bay Area rivalry between the 9ers and Raiders. There used to be a regular preseason game played between the two teams, but that has been canceled more often than not in recent years due to violence between fans. The word rivalry might be something of an understatement for the ill will felt by fans of either franchise towards the others. It certainly didn’t help when the Raiders beat the 49ers this year despite posting a 3-13 season. The Raiders only won three games, all of them at home, and one of those games was to the 49ers who were experiencing their own collapse this year. With both teams fielding new head coaches and potentially in the midst of a rebuild it will be interesting to see whether the black and gold or black and red emerges as the better team.

It’s always good to see the 49ers-Raiders rivalry alive and well, even if the 49ers moved way down to the south end of the bay and the Raiders could move to the south end of California. Whoever did the photoshop job for the Raiders uniforms did a great job. They look horrendous.
