The Kentucky Derby has come and gone, and one of the prop bets that folks were placing wagers on was the over/under on the time of the race.

The Kentucky Derby was on Saturday, and bettors all across the world were placing wagers on a slew of different prop bets from who would win the race to where the horses would finish to the size of certain celebrities hats.

But one of the time honored traditions at the Kentucky Derby is trying to determine the over/under on the total amount of time it takes to win the race.

Entering the race, odds were on the race lasting 2:02.20 with the under being something that would be flirting with history. No one has bene able to touch the record set by Secretariat when he ran a 1 minute, 59.40 race at Churchill Downs in 1973. Since then, no race has been won in a shorter amount of time and the oddsmakers this year weren’t getting near that mark.

Still, the average race time seems to be in the low two-minute region and that’s what was expected today.

In the end, American Pharaoh won the Kentucky Derby in 2:03.02, which put those who bet the over in the green.

Betting on the over/under is always something that is exciting in that it’s not really up to a decision of someone winning over another. It didn’t matter who won the Kentucky Derby this year to those who bet on the over/under of the total time it took for the race to be won.

It’s one of the most exciting ways to have a dog in a fight without actually needing someone specific to win. That’s the nature of the over/under bet and it’s one of the reasons the Kentucky Derby is one of the best betting events of the year.
