DraftKings Pitcher Picks for May 4
Welcome to our regular DraftKings column, were we give out the première Starting Pitcher Selections for their Daily Fantasy Baseball contests. The results of my picks on Saturday were a mixed bag with Arrieta ($9,100/10.45 FP), Liriano ($9000, 20.4 FP), Archer ($8200, 9.5 FP), and Morrow ($6900, 16.7 FP). The saving grace if you played Arrieta was that almost everybody had him too, around two-thirds in the large DK tournaments and even all the entries in some of the smaller 50/50s. Below are my picks for Monday night, May 4th, 2015. Good Luck!
High Range ($8000 and up)
Alex Wood (ATL) home vs. PHI for $8400: Wood has been off to a mediocre start with a 4.03 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, and 20 Ks in 29 IP. But it’s early and the talented Braves young star came into the year with 2.94 ERA and 247 Ks in 244 1/3 IP in 35 career starts. Look for Wood to get on track at home against the 9-17 Phillies who are 29th in the majors in runs scored.

Clayton Kershaw (LAD) at MIL for $12000: After some shaky starts to begin the season, Kershaw is getting back to his old ways, with 3 ER, 27 Ks, and only 3 walks in 19 IP in his last 3 outings. Normally, I don’t like starting pitchers in Miller Park, but he is a perfect 4-0 in four career starts in Milwaukee, with a 0.87 ERA. The price is steep, but against the Brewers (5th in the league with 208 strikeouts) he could get you 30+ points.
Stay Away: Everyone else. I have concerns with each of the rest of the pitchers in this range as Hernandez (13-14 career vs. ANA), Bumgarner (5 ER, 10 H in 3 IP at SD on 4/11), Ross (4.55 ERA, 1.63 WHIP), Zimmerman (4.88 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and only 18 in 27 2/3 IP), Hughes (14.1 FPPG), and Kuechel (TEX was 3rd in majors in ’14 vs. LHP) aren’t worth the investment.
Low Range ($7800 and down)
Travis Wood (CHC) at STL for $7200: The Cub lefty is off to a good start at 2-1 with a 3.04 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 26 Ks in 23 2/3 IP in 4 starts. He’s coming off an excellent outing in a win against the Pirates, striking out 9 in 7 IP with only 2 runs allowed. Plus, he faces a Cardinal offense that has only scored 7 runs in their last 35 innings. This is a great bargain with a huge upside.
