Jameis Winston no longer allowed to play baseball
A clause in his new Tampa Bay Buccaneers contract prohibits Jameis Winston from playing baseball.
Hopefully Jameis Winston doesn’t have the itch to swing a bat or play second base.
A clause in the quarterback’s new deal with the Bucs prohibits him from playing professional baseball during the duration of the contract, according to Peter King of Sports Illustrated. While at Florida State, Winston, who signed the four year $25.3 million deal on Sunday, played both baseball and football.
Previously, Winston discussed his dual-sports status with SI, “it has always been my dream [to play both sports].”
Now, being a professional athletes in two sports is nearly impossible and it’s unlikely that it was Winston’s intention. Apparently, though, the Bucs wanted to cover all over their bases to make sure Winston was not running around any. He is their franchise quarterback after all – at least for the next four years.

Winston has insisted that football is his focus, but that he has always loved baseball as well. Hmm, dedicating your career to one sport but always loving another one as well? Where have we heard that before?
Now that Winston is contractually obligated not to play baseball, the question is how much he will actually miss it. Sure he will be busy learning the ins and outs of an NFL playbook and assimilating himself into his new team, but it’s not so easy to put such a huge part of your life behind you.
Maybe we will have an MJ-esque retirement situation on our hands in a few years. Perhaps Winston will leave the Bucs to go play for the Rays’ minor league affiliate?
Crazier things have happened. For now, Jameis will have to concentrate on living up to his number one overall status on the football field.
