Surprise, surprise. Another day after the fight, yet more Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. news has emerged.
The giant domino effect of post-fight media sensation began immediately after the fight, when Manny Pacquiao admitted to fighting with a bad shoulder. It was actually a little more than just a bad shoulder; it was a torn rotator cuff, an injury that typically takes at least nine months and potentially up to to a year to recover from. Pacquiao, however, was not going to let the fight he had been waiting five years for, or the massive paycheck that came along with it, slip out of his grasp.
He will undergo surgery later this week for the injury, and the operation will be performed by renowned surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache. Pacquiao is absolutely looking to making a comeback to the ring once he is back to his old self, or however much a boxer that will turn 37 before he is healthy can recover.
Meanwhile, Mayweather, who adamantly stated both before and after the fight that the last fight in his career would come in September, appears to have changed his mind once he learned that his opponent was not at full strength. Now the champ wants a rematch in a year when Pacquiao is healthy.
It turns out that Pacquiao is willing to make the rematch happen, at least according to his promoter, Bob Arum.
"“We first have to make sure the rotator cuff heals well,” Arum said via Sports Illustrated. “Dr. ElAttrache is a famous surgeon, one of the best in the business, so I’m confident the surgery will work, and if it does, why wouldn’t we entertain a rematch?”"
Well Mr. Arum, I know why you, Pacquiao and Mayweather and the rest of the two camps would entertain a rematch. After all, the two fighters were able to generate the highest priced bout in boxing, bringing in more money in one night than many of us will ever dream of making in our lifetimes.
Here is a simple reason why boxing fans should not “entertain a rematch”: t=The first fight was overhyped and boring as hell, with both of those being massive understatements.
Neither boxer is going to change their fighting style. Mayweather will still dance around the ring for 12 rounds, and as myself and many others have stated plenty of times before, the only way for Pacquiao to win is to land a knockout blow.
Can a healthy Pacquiao deliver such a knockout punch, or at least give us a memorable fight?
I seriously doubt it, but you never know, he could surprise us. All I know is I will refuse to spend another $100 to watch these washed up rivals try to ‘save the sport.’
I have a brilliant idea for the sport of boxing: How about finding some promising young talent to promote instead of putting all of your effort into a serial woman abuser in Mayweather and an injured boxer that will never be the same in Pacquiao?
Both boxers will be nearing 40 by the time a rematch is even possible. Please do not put real fans of boxing through this misery again. That is how you save the sport, if there is any hope left.
