New York Post puts the Rangers on blast after falling behind 3-1 in series.

The New York Post never claimed to be understated. The paper followed that mold by crushing the hometown New York Rangers on Wednesday night.

Following the Rangers’2-1 game 4 loss to the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night, the Post’s Brett Cyrgalis wrote a brutally honest game recap. In the piece, Cyrgalis described the loss as “gut-wrenching,” describing the Rangers’ situation as “desperation.”

Though the Rangers desperately need a win, their situation is not exactly desperate. For the Flames or the Wild, maybe. For the Rangers, not so much.

To be fair to the Rangers have played a lot of close games. A lot. In fact, with Wednesday night’s 2-1 loss, the Rangers have played in an NHL-record 11 consecutive postseason games decided by one goal – just one goal. They’re hardly getting blown out by their opponents – first the New York Islanders and now the Caps.

Now, to be less fair to the Rangers, this team was expected by most to run over the teams in the Eastern Conference. Fans in New York were practically banking on a Stanley Cup finals appearance. After losing to the Los Angeles Kings in last year’s finals, the Rangers were out to avenge their loss. Until Wednesday night, they looked to be well on their way.

While it’s true that the Rangers “have their backs against the wall,” if any team left in the NHL playoffs can do it, they can.

Though coming back from a 3-1 deficit is unlikely, but this team is a good one. They earned the President’s Trophy after capturing the best record in the regular season. All it takes is one or two bounces to go their way. In fact, just last year the Rangers were down 3-1 to the Pittsburgh Penguins and managed to come back, win the series, and advance all the way to the Stanley Cup finals.

The Rangers seem confident that they can still take the series, or so they say. Marc Staal said after the game, “we now we can beat [the Capitals], now we just have to do it three times in a row.”

Now, if the Rangers wants to get back to the finals avenge their loss, they are going to need a little hockey magic. And, if they make it out of this series, we hope the Post is the first one to congratulate them.
