Melvin Gordon, RB, San Diego

Of the two first round backs, the San Diego Chargers’ Melvin Gordon doesn’t have the pure talent that Todd Gurley does, but might be in a situation which lends itself to a better initial season. Gordon doesn’t catch the ball and isn’t much to crow about in pass protection, which makes him (mostly) a two-down back) but he’s also a nice complement to Branden Oliver and Danny Woodhead.

Gordon has the advantage of a great passing offense to clear out stacked boxes. Quarterback Philip Rivers should do well as Malcom Floyd has become a solid receiver again, and Keenan Allen continues to look impressive. Tight end Antonio Gates is aging and wants a reduced role, but remains a critical weapon for San Diego whole Ladarius Green might finally have the breakout year we’ve been waiting for.

And at 6’1”, Gordon could get lost by the defense behind a line which tends toward 6’3” and up, making it tough for defenses to keep track of him.

The Chargers have a defense which will keep things tight too, which means he will be on the field more often. If they can keep the chains moving (which Gordon will be helping with) being limited to mostly first and second down situations might not be a big deal. At some point, improving his pass blocking is a must, but for his first season, it might not be. And if the Chargers have a lead he’s a perfect choice to grind the clock.

Ultimately, he is in a great position to get a Pro Bowl berth this year, but faces some stiff competition in guys like Jamaal Charles, Arian Foster and LeSean McCoy. However his situation and ability give him a shot for this year and even if he misses, they make it highly likely he have multiple Pro Bowl appearances on his career.
