Colin Kaepernick came to the aid of Tom Brady in the wake of his probable involvement in Deflategate.

New England Patriots Tom Brady is finding out who really has his trust and support and who doesn’t in the wake of his “more probable than not” involvement in Deflategate that Ted Wells determined Brady was “generally aware” of balls being deflated.

Many are already prepared to put an asterisk next to Brady’s career achievements and ban him from inclusion in the Pro Football Hall of Fame five years after he retires. Some aren’t as extreme as that camp and would simply suspend him for one year, suspend head coach Bill Belichick, fine the organization and strip the team of some high draft picks.

Others aren’t as extreme and think Brady should be and will be suspended but believe this transgression is as minor as you can get on the cheating scale. Yes, cheating is wrong and there’s no denying that, but just like all things, there are levels of severity involved.

If you are driving 10 MPH over the speed limit and get a ticket, you broke the law and will be punished, but you’re not in the same group as a person who robbed a bank, right?

100 percent right.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick would seem to fall into the camp that doesn’t think this is much of a big deal and would jive with the notion that all quarterbacks mess with the psi of the balls they work with and came to the support of Brady.

Kaepernick references the 45-7 win by the Patriots over the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship Game when it was discovered the Patriots used balls in the first half that were below the league mandated minimum levels.

I know we all like to think we’re the smartest people around and don’t mind telling others just how smart we are, but I think we’re all smart enough to think that Tom Brady and the Patriots would have beat the Colts if they used a glow-in-the-dark frisbee instead of footballs that day.

The NFL likely won’t see it that way as Brady is reportedly going to be suspended for an undetermined length of time, but at least he’s got the support of Kaepernick and I’m guessing plenty more current and former NFL players too.
