Early DraftKings Pitcher Picks For May 9

Welcome back to the best place to get expert Starting Pitcher Selections for DraftKings Daily Fantasy Baseball contests. If you have gone with my picks, you have been very competitive in DK DFLs. My 32 primary SP picks to date (average salary $8,300) netted 19.3 FPPG. Last night was no exception as Sonny Gray (24.7 FP/$9,800), Tim Lincecum (29.9 FP/$7,500), and Nathan Karns (30.15/$5,300) were all highly productive. Plus, my advice to stay away from David Price (0.45 FP/$10,400) was correct. Below are my picks for the early (1:05 pm EST) slate of DraftKings’ contests for Saturday, May 9th, 2015. Good Luck!

  • Anibal Sanchez (DET) home vs. KC for $8,600: Sanchez has rebounded from two brutal mid-April outings to string together three quality starts in which he has 20.4 FPPG at an average salary of $7,800. Sanchez has changed his approach recently to attack hitters with first pitch strikes and it has paid dividends. He faces the Royals today against whom he was effective on 5/2 with a win and 3 RA in 7 1/3 IP. Lastly, he’s pitching at home for the Tigers who coming off an emotional 6-5 win vs. their divisional rivals and are a -150 favorite today. Expect Sanchez’ uptrend to continue and Detroit to get the W and the extra 4 FPs.

Doug Fister (WAS) at ATL for $7300:  Fister has been up and down this year, but has decent numbers this year (2-1, 2.61 ERA) and was a stellar 16-6 w/ a 2.41 ERA in 2014 for the Nationals. He does only have 14 Ks in 31 IP in 2015 but the strikeout rate should rise to get closer to his career 6.1 K/9 figure. Fister was dominant against the Mets last time out on 5/3 going 6 1/3 innings with 0 ER and 3 K for 21.3 FP at $7300, the same price he is today at home vs. Atlanta. He was not good vs. the Braves on 4/27 (5 2/3, 4 ER, 10 H, 3 Ks) but he does have a career 3-1 record and 2.28 ERA against them. Plus, the Nationals are on now on fire, having won 8 of 10, and are about a -155 favorite today.

Stay Away: Phil Hughes (MIN) at CLE for $10400. Hughes is off to an awful start in 2015 at 1-4 with a 5.02 ERA, 1.33 ERA, and only 12.5 FPPG. Coming of a win vs. OAK on 5/4, it could be tempting to take Hughes and his streaking Twins (17-13), who go up against the 10-18 Indians. But Cleveland is still a slight favorite, which should tell you something. Additionally, Progressive field is not friendly to pitchers (2nd in ML in park factor runs in ’15 at 1.49) and the run line is set at 9. Buyer beware!
