Late FanDuel Pitcher Picks – May 9

Welcome back to FantasyCPR, where you get free, expert advice daily on all your fantasy leagues and teams. Our selections for May 8th were successful as Gonzalez (17 FP/$8900), Gray (14 FP/$9400), Lincecum (18 FP/$7000), Karns (18 FP/$6500), and Pelfrey (9 FP/$6400) all were productive both from a real and fantasy baseball perspective. Without further ado, there are 9 games in the evening slate (7:05 p.m. EST) on FanDuel. Here are my starting pitcher selections for FanDuel lineups in the late May 9th contests:

  • Madison Bumgarner (SF) home vs. SF for $10,100: The star SF lefty is off to a great start, going 3-1 with a 3.03 ERA, 1.06 WHIP with 32 Ks and 38 2/3 IP. He has been extremely dominant lately, winning his last two starts while allowing only one ER in 15 1/3 IP with 15 Ks. He is almost a lock to get you 7 IP and 6+ Ks, which is worth paying the $10K+ salary for. Expect Bumgarner and San Francisco -170 favorite to roll again tonight against the Marlins at home, where the Giants have won 9 of their last 11.

Dallas Keuchel (HOU) at LAA for $9100: Keuchel has been one of baseball’s early season sensations, putting up numbers that place him atop the pitchers in the major leagues: 3-0 with a 0.80 ERA, 0.76 with 13.8 FP. He faces an Angels squad who is just 20th in the league against LHP with a .241 BA. Houston is even a slight favorite tonight against LAA that rolls out Matt Shoemaker who has given up 3 ER or more in all of his 6 starts. Count on Dallas to put up double digits and give you a decent return on investment.

  • Stay Away: Clayton Kershaw (LAD) at CLE for $10400. Yes, Kershaw is a great pitcher and the returning NL MVP and Cy Young winner but he has three things going against him tonight: 1) He hasn’t pitched up to normal expectations for him so far in 2015 with a 3.72 ERA, 1-2 record, and only 12.9 FPPG;      2) He’s pitching in Coors Field tonight which is the première hitter’s park (top 2014 park factor runs of 1.5) in the majors; and    3) Tonight’s salary of $11200 is simply too high. Bottom line, when you spend top-dollar for a starting pitcher you have to be pretty certain that they would not have bad outing. That’s not necessarily the case tonight and there’s better options out there to spend your money.

    Good Luck!
