Fantasy Baseball Starting Pitchers: Studs, Duds, and Sleepers-May 9, 2015
3 Starting Pitcher Sleepers
1. Jonathon Niese-New York Mets: After getting knocked around on Sunday Night Baseball, Niese bounced back with a nice start against the Nationals allowing just one run on nine hits in seven innings on Saturday. The Mets failed to get him any run support, though, and he fell to 2-2 on the season despite a solid 2.40 ERA. Niese has allowed more than one earned run in just one of his five starts this season, and he’s a solid fantasy baseball sleeper as the Mets take on the Phillies tonight.
2. Chase Whitley-New York Yankees: Whitley has allowed a total of just one run in his first two MLB starts this season allowing 12 hits in his 12 innings of work while striking out 11 and walking just one. This afternoon, he and the Yankees host the Orioles again who are just 4-10 on the road. Whitley should have a good shot at a win if he can continue dealing and he makes a solid play in daily leagues where he is cheap or in the 91% of ESPN leagues in which is is still on the waiver wire.
3. Chase Anderson-Arizona Diamondbacks: Anderson gets the ball tonight as the D-Backs host the Padres. He’s coming off his best start of the season after allowing just two hits and one walk in six shutout innings against the Dodgers. Unfortunately for Anderson, the Arizona bats were also silent and he finished with a no-decision. He enters tonight’s game with a 3.38 ERA and three quality starts despite still being in search of his first win of the season. All three of those quality starts came in his last four outings, and he should be in position to turn in another good outing today. Expecting a win may be asking a lot, but for a pitcher who is owned in just 2.2% or ESPN leagues, Anderson has a ton of upside and plenty to offer in a good matchup against the Padres.
