Tony Romo and Andrew Luck joining Manning brothers in DirecTV ads
Tony Romo and Andrew Luck to join Peyton and Eli Manning in the 2015 DirecTV commercials.
Featuring NFL players in commercials must be working out well for DirecTV.
The company announced that Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will join Peyton and Eli Manning in this year’s DirecTV advertising campaign.
From DirecTV’s press release:
“[Andrew and Tony] add even more muscle to DIRECTV’s 2015 sports marketing depth chart topped by current co-captains Petyon and Eli Manning, who have been DIRECTV spokesmen for more than a decade. Romo and Luck, who signed multi-year aggreements, will join the Manning brothers in a wide variety of public relations, advertising and marketing activities to promote DirectTV’s exclusive NFL football subscription service that is included at no extra charge with qualifying packages in new customer offers this year.”
So it looks like Andrew and Tony will be in it the for the long haul.
If the NFL is going to shove commercials down our throats every five minutes, they might as well be decent. And, to be fair, DirecTV puts out some decent adds. Except for the Rob Lowe ones, those are just terrible.
And say what you want about Peyton and Eli on and off the field, but they put together some fantastic commercials. No athletes in the NFL are more self-deprecating or have better senses of humor. It’s unlikely that Romo and Luck will be better than the Manning brothers.
As for the Manning brothers best commercials, let’s list them, shall we?
3. Peyton’s “cut that meat” Mastercard commercial (2008). This one has it all, humor, memorable tag lines, and sub sandwiches. Gold, Jerry!
2. Peyton and Eli’s Football on your Phone (2013). Such a catchy song just begging to be parodied. Don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about.
1. Peyton and Eli – Football Cops Trailer (2011). The act Mike Tahoe and C.J. Hunter? Those football puns? Perfect. And the production quality is just another level.
Luck and Romo are recognizable, sure, but neither seem to be the most charismatic or entertaining players. Plus, one of the best parts of the Manning brothers’ videos are random appearances by Archie, their Dad. Who is going to make a cameo in the Romo/Luck commercials? Jerry Jones and Jim Irsay? I seriously hope not.
At the minimum, let’s hope that Romo and Luck exceed our admittedly low expectations and give us a commercial we won’t hate.
