It looks as if the Kentucky Wildcats are set to ink head coach John Calipari to a new deal through 2022

The Kentucky Wildcats are reportedly close to signing an extension with head coach John Calipari, Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio reports. The one-year added on to his deal that’s already in place would be worth in the area of $8 million.

Should the extension be signed, when all is said and done the contract would be for seven years and $54 million.

Of course, Kentucky working out a deal with Calipari is not all that shocking for a number of reasons.

First off, this past season Kentucky had one of the greatest teams that was ever put together, showing once again that Calipari is quite frankly the best recruiter in the nation. While they didn’t finish with a national championship –nor undefeated, like many thought they would– it was still a pretty impressive class that did some pretty spectacular things.

Then, of course, there’s the possibility of an NBA jump. With the continued success that Calipari has at Kentucky, his name keeps popping up for vacant NBA positions. Just earlier in the day on Tuesday the New Orleans Pelicans fired head coach Monty Williams, and with the Anthony Davis factor, Calipari will certainly be mentioned as a potential replacement. And, again, he’ll be a candidate for other vacant positions as well.

Signing this deal doesn’t guarantee that he wouldn’t test the NBA coaching waters again, but it certainly helps in swaying his decision to maybe stay in Lexington.
