Just in case you didn’t already feel old, we have a little bit of news for you. Leeroy Jenkins’ epic battle, and epic failure, that made him a household name officially turns ten years old. That’s right…the Leeroy Jenkins episode happened ten years ago. So…you feel old yet?
We don’t know about you, but we feel like this is the perfect opportunity to take a little trip down memory lane, or for those of you who may actually not know about the incident, or why his name is so commonplace in the game, to be introduced one of the most hilarious moments in gaming history.
So…Leeroy Jenkins was just like one of the gang, a character in the MMORPG World of Warcraft. In other words, he was one of 14 million people who log onto the game every day in hopes of achieving greatness and hoarding all sorts of epic loot.
If his guildmates in Pals for Life had any idea what was about to occur, we may not have one of the most hilarious moments that have ever been captured on video. Of course, if you were one of the people in Leeroy’s raiding group you probably didn’t find it too hilarious, but we digress.
The group waits patiently outside of the Rookery where the group leader is discussing their strategy and what each person in the group is going to have to do in order for them to be successful in their journey. Then…it happened. “LEEEEEEEEEEEROOOOOOOOOOYY JEEENKIIIIIIIINNNS!!!!!”
Now, before any of you look at the date on the video above and say “Wait a minute…that video is only a little over a year old,” this is not the original. It is just the clearest version available on YouTube. Here is a look at the original video, which you can see on WarcraftMovies.com.
So…allow us to set the scene for you. As the group leader is going over their strategy, Leeroy is clearly not paying attention. In fact, Leeroy is not even at his keyboard. When he returns, Leeroy lets out his epic battle cry and charges into the cave, leaving his friends behind.
Never one to bail on a teammate, or simply not wanting to fail in an incredibly difficult portion of their raid, his friends rush in after him vowing to stick to the plan. Unfortunately, Leeroy’s shenanigans made that nearly impossible. After all of his teammates, including himself, fell in battle they proceeded to tell him what an idiot he was. His response…”At least I have chicken.”
We highly doubt that when he embarked on that epic journey that he had any idea that he would become the internet sensation that he did. Leeroy Jenkins, who is actually played by a man by the name of Ben Schulz, became so iconic that the people at Blizzard Entertainment have made moves to forever incorporate Leeroy Jenkins into the lore of the game.
There is now an achievement in the game that when completed gives you the title <name> Jenkins. The name of the achievement…”Leeeeeeeeeeeeeroy!” Also, there is a card in the game Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft that bears his likeness and voice and unleashes whelplings when you play the card.
We would be lying to you if we told you we haven’t watched this video a million times. Heck, we’ve probably already watched it five times this afternoon. This is simply one of those moments in gaming history that will never, ever get old.
We tip our hats to you, Leeroy Jenkins. May your journeys continue to be epic and always have your chicken when you need it the most.
