Not many people were surprised Jameis Winston was taken No. 1 overall in the 2015 NFL Draft two weeks ago. However, many people were skeptical about Winston’s off-field issues and what his potential “personality issues” could mean for his NFL career.
Over a week into Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie minicamp, the former Florida State quarterback has been making an impact with his new team — a positive one. Yes, the doubters have been silenced for the time being as Winston is making the Buccaneers look very smart with their selection.
This was the guy that Tampa Bay was hoping to make its franchise quarterback even with Mike Glennon still on the roster.
Looks like they made the right choice.
Winston has been making a great impression on fellow teammates, coaches and higher-ups as he was seen shaking every rookie’s hand who walked into the practice facility last week — something he seems to do quite often, if not every day.
"Jameis Winston was first to arrive at One Buc to meet & greet all of his fellow rookies heading into Mini-Camp https://t.co/phCGki8tBW— Tampa Bay Buccaneers (@TBBuccaneers) May 7, 2015"
Head coach Lovie Smith loves what Jameis is all about, according to ESPN. He loves the positivity that Winston brings to the field — on and off — and this is what he had to say:
"“Most of the stuff that Jameis does is unscripted. No one told him to greet his teammates. It’s kind of who he is. He’s a positive guy. I’m not going to have to give him a pep talk every day. That’s part of what we like about him. But there’s so much more we like, too.”"
Smith isn’t the only one who is impressed with the type of person Winston is, however. Former Nebraska wide receiver, and current Buccaneers teammate, Kenny Bell is rooming with the Heisman-winning QB, and it’s going very smoothly.
"“He’s the best roommate I’ve ever had, one of the best teammates I’ve ever had. It’s been phenomenal. We’ve been going from about 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and then we get back to the hotel and he wants to study more … He’s dedicated to his job, that’s for sure.”"
That’s pretty high praise for a guy who many were questioning his character issues.
Take that, doubters. It looks like Jameis is doing more than fine in Tampa.
