Fantasy baseball starting pitchers: Studs, duds, and sleepers-May 18, 2015
3 Starting Pitcher Sleepers
1. C.J. Wilson-Los Angeles Angels: Wilson has quietly put together a very nice start to the season this year and is the only pitcher besides Matt Harvey who comes into today’s start with an ERA under 3.00. Wilson is still only owned in 57.2% of ESPN leagues, but he makes a nice two-start pickup if you can add him before he takes on the Blue Jays this afternoon. Wilson has allowed two earned runs or fewer in all but one of his seven starts which is why he has a solid 2.63 ERA despite his uninspiring 2-2 record. While he probably will give up some runs North of the border today, I think he has a good shot at a win and deserves a look if you can get him at a still-underrated price.
2. Jordan Lyles-Colorado Rockies: Lyles only lasted an inning in his last start after taking a liner off his pitching hand. He avoided serious injury and should be able to start tonight against the Phillies. At home, Lyles is worth a look since he’s 1-1 with a 2.75 ERA in his three starts at Coors this season. Historically, he’s been good at home, and in this matchup I think he’s a good play that is available in 95% of ESPN leagues.
3. Mike Fiers-Milwaukee Brewers: Fiers is on this list on the strength of one statistical category–strikeouts. In each of his last four games, Fiers has fanned at least six and now has 49 punchouts on the year in just 36 innings. He has only allowed more than two earned runs in one of his last four starts, but if you grab him for his start tonight against Detroit, you should be able to count on some solid K’s even if he does give up some runs.
