John Calipari denies original report, not interested in Pelicans job
Kentucky head coach John Calipari has already denied the report of his rumored interest in the New Orleans Pelicans vacant head coaching position.
Kentucky head coach John Calipari is one of the most outspoken and successful coaches in college basketball today. The sixth-year Wildcat head coach has taken stops in his career in Memphis as well as with Massachusetts before landing a dream job with Kentucky.
Calipari has recruited and coached some of the nation’s top talent and he has placed dozens upon dozens of players in the NBA.
With a national title and five Final Fours under his belt, many believe Calipari has accomplished all he needs to accomplish at the collegiate level, looking forward to maybe the next step in his career: the NBA. Rumors of the head coach leaving Lexington for a job at the next level have been running rampant for the past few years and he continually denies them.
On Tuesday morning, however, NOLA.com reported that a source close to Calipari stated that he would be open to coaching the New Orleans Pelicans, welcoming the idea of leading his former players Tyreke Evans and Anthony Davis.
According to the report:
"“There have been exploratory conversations between Calipari and the Pelicans, the source said, but it doesn’t appear the team would be willing to meet his financial demands to leave Kentucky.”"
Just a couple of hours after this was released, the Kentucky head coach took to Twitter to ensure Big Blue Nation that he was going nowhere.
Sure, the Pelicans job is an intriguing one for a coach looking for a bigger and better challenge as the team is one of the league’s best up-and-comers, but he has consistently said how happy he is to be at Kentucky.
Calipari and Kentucky are a match made in heaven because Wildcat fans welcome one-and-done talent who can bring titles and Final Fours and Coach Cal brings that every year with his top-notch recruiting success as well as solid coaching style.
Year in and year out, the Wildcats are national title contenders and they constantly have a top-five, if not No. 1, recruiting class coming in.
There you have it, folks, John Calipari isn’t going anywhere — for now.
