A Mike Trout broken-bat single made the baseball world hold it’s collective breath for all the wrong reasons.

Catcher’s gear is commonly referred to as “the tools of ignorance.”  If you’ve never heard the expression before, it simply means that a man must be out of his mind to play a position that is so hazardous it requires all that protective equipment. Toronto Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin was very lucky to not have more sense knocked out of him during a Mike Trout at-bat on Tuesday night.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Mike Trout swung on a 1-2 pitch.  Upon contact, Trout’s bat splintered and on the follow-through, the barrel of the bat hit Martin. Needless to say, it could have been very ugly.

Russell Martin would stay in the game and connect with his second single of the night in the bottom half of that same inning.

As noted in the video, the umpire would also be hit by the broken bat. This is eerily reminiscent of the May 14 Buster Posey-Alfonso Marquez incident.

Mama’s and papa’s, don’t let your babies grow up to catchers or umpires!

In both circumstances, the sportsmanship showed by Mike Trout and Buster Posey is something to be proud of.
