The NFL changed it’s extra point rules on Tuesday, and it could have some big impacts on your fantasy football team.

When the NFL announced that it had changed it’s extra point rule on Tuesday afternoon, it washed over some fans as just something else that has changed in the game. But for others, the forward thinking brought them straight to their fantasy football rosters and what this rule change means for their teams.

First and foremost, the rule change itself needs to be addressed. Dean Blandino confirmed the rule change on Tuesday afternoon and stated that this season will feature extra points kicked from 33-yards out and two point conversions that can be returned by defenses for points of their own.

Here’s a breakdown of the new rule changes:

That’s huge, but mostly because of it’s fantasy football value.

Don’t get it twisted, the impact this rule change has on the competitiveness of the game is pretty massive. If a team not only misses on a two point conversion but allows a defense to sore, then their touchdown is only worth four points.

This also has fantasy impact value in that your defenses just got more valuable and your kickers just got a whole lot more risky.

It’s not that a kickers value were solely based on their extra point kicking ability but not everyone can hit a 33-yard field goal with ease. That’s what’s important here as extra points were easy fantasy points — an that’s not no longer the case at all.

Defenses being able to return two point conversions is huge, as it adds value there but there was already heavy value on fantasy defenses. Kickers are going to be very interesting to watch this season in terms of their fantasy value as you need to look past just their extra point value and look more analytically at their kicking range and accuracy seeing that there’s not such thing as a chip shot anymore.
