Softball fans sing Star Spangled Banner
On Tuesday afternoon, the softball fans at the game between Baylor and Louisiana-Lafayette decided to take musical and patriotic matters into their own hands. The contest was the third of the day at the stadium, so organizers made the call not to play the national anthem again. The fans in Louisiana were not having it, and from that decision came an amazing moment, per Luke Johnson of The Advocate.
This is what can be so special about sports. Often, it is not the actual game that we remember, but the moments we had while enjoying the event. Few people will recall the score of that game 10 years from now, but the memory of signing the national anthem with a group of complete strangers will always resonate.
There have been some great moments over the years involving sports and the Star Spangled Banner. One of the most famous took place at Super Bowl XXV, when the New York Giants and Buffalo Bills were treated to Whitney Houston belting out perhaps the best rendition of all-time. What made it more special was American entering the Gulf War that same week.
Another famous moment came less than a month later at the NHL All-Star game in Chicago, when the fans actually cheered louder than the singer.
Then there was the recent rendition of Daniel Rodriguez at Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals between the New York Rangers and Washington Capitals. Goosebumps all around.
America.
