Everyone probably remembers “Hatgate,” when San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick wore the hat of another NFL team, thus angering his fans back in the Bay Area. Well, it appears he’s outdone himself with the following rather insensitive Instagram post.
That’s right, a picture of the devastating flooding and storms going on in Houston right now. He may have tacked on a #prayersup at the end of the post, but it hardly excuses this asinine posting. It is hard to tell what exactly he is talking about with the “7torm coming,” although it could be about the 49ers playing against the Houston Texans in their first preseason game this August. Regardless, it is an incredibly insensitive move.
If you’ve frequented any major Niners blogs recently, it’s not hard to reach the conclusion that Kaepernick seems to irritate the Niners faithful far more than he impresses them. This isn’t going to do anything to change that perspective. It’s especially ill-timed considering Kaepernick was supposed to be all about working on his quarterback skills in the offseason, but now it looks like he can’t get out of his own way. Storms killing people and destroying an area are nothing to joke about, as literally everyone knows.
The majority of Twitter is ripping him, while a minority are wondering if he got hacked. He did delete the post almost immediately and offered the following on Twitter.
Somehow, I think it’s unlikely that anyone who saw that post wasn’t immediately outraged. Especially any poor, battered soul from the Houston area. There are probably Niners fans there as well, who probably aren’t too pleased with Kaepernick.
Protip: think before you post things on social media. Is that too much to ask?
