Despite not yet having a new contract, Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers implies that he’d like to finish his career in San Diego.

The debate about Philip Rivers’ future with the San Diego Chargers started two months ago when he did not sign an extension, rejecting San Diego proposals. Then trade rumors cropped up right before the draft in connection with the Chargers wanting to move up for Marcus Mariota.

However, Rivers is now talking like he wants to stay with the team. Rivers said on Tuesday that it would be “awesome” to finish his career out in San Diego, at the same time confirming there is nothing new in contract talks, according to a story on NFL.com.

Nevertheless, both sides are increasingly optimistic that a deal will indeed get done and make Rivers the team’s franchise quarterback for the rest of his career. Part of the reason Rivers rejected the Chargers’ earlier overtures for a long-term contract was the joint stadium proposal by the team with the Oakland Raiders in Los Angeles. The Rams are reportedly also eying the area. All of those teams have played in L.A. in the past.

Rivers said earlier in the offseason that he wasn’t sure where he stood with the organization. Rivers will be entering his 12th season in the NFL, all of which have taken place in San Diego. The Chargers picked up Rivers in a trade with the New York Giants during the 2004 NFL Draft, after New York had taken him with the fourth overall pick. Ultimately, Rivers went to the Chargers with Eli Manning heading to Gotham.

The Chargers would do well to keep Rivers around until he retires. Franchise quarterbacks are hard to come by and Rivers is no slouch. Last season was a touch down from Rivers’ 2013 campaign, but was better than his 2011 and 2012 seasons. He had a 93.8 passer rating, started all 16 games and threw for 4,286 yards along with 31 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. His career passer rating is at 95.7 with 36,655 yards and 252 touchdowns.
