Swapped Headlines: FIFA and NFL have more in common than you thought

Ever feel like you’re reading an article and the headline doesn’t accurately reflect the content. Well I look at some of the bigger stories in  sports and come up with some headlines I think are better suited to the actual story.

“A-Rod earns 100th LEGAL RBI”

No, I don’t actually know that, but after all the Biogensis PED nonsense, who truly knows for sure. In Wednesday’s 4-2 win over the Royals, Alex Rodriguez hit a three-run homer giving him 1,995 career RBIs pushing past Lou Gehrig (1,993) and moving into third on the all-time list. Next on the list is Barry Bonds at 1,996 and on top is Hank Aaron with 2,297.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said, “It is longevity, but it is also being productive for an extremely long time.”

Maybe some drugs too.

“Hypocrite Slava Fetisov wants players to NEVER leave Russia”

Russian senator and former Detroit Red Wings player Slava Fetisov is pushing for his country to bring back Soviet-style restrictions to its hockey players. The federal law would prevent Russian players from heading to North America to join the NHL before they’re 28.  Fetisov told Russia’s R-Sport news agency the goal is to keep their “most talented guys, the ones who the people come to see.”

Rather shocking coming from a guy who took advantage of the laxed Soviet-era rules in 1989. In fact, he was one of the first. Slava joined the New Jersey Devils when he was 31 and eventually won two Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings.

“FIFA and the NFL have more in common than you thought”

After a long investigation into FIFA, U.S. prosecutors claim to have uncovered different schemes, proof of bribery, and corruption that has been plaguing the world football organization for at least 24 years. At a news conference, U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced 14 people are facing federal charges for their involvement, including FIFA officials who solicited bribes from sports marketing firms and others.

Lynch also said investigators found $110 million in bribes linked to the planning of the 2016 Copa America involving officials at both CONCACAF and CONMEBOL. Possibly the biggest scheme they uncovered involved the awarding of the 2010 World Cup to South Africa. FIFA banned 11 of the 14 indicted from football-related activities including their vice presidents Jeffrey Webb, Eduardo Li, Julio Rocha, Costas Takkas, Rafael Esquivel, and Jose Marin.

“Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden is a pushover”

Washington Redskins receiver DeSean Jackson was excused from the team’s first organized activities to go to the Cleveland Cavaliers game.

Ok, perhaps that’s not entirely the case. Jackson will be missing the entire first week of OTAs but, it just so happened he spent Tuesday in Cleveland and made an appearance in Hollywood on Wednesday for rapper Kid Cali’s single release party.

However, coach Jay Gruden stressed Jackson was given an excused absence. Three other big name players for Washington missed OTAs. Tight end Jordan Reed was getting his knee examined, which is totally understandable. Then you have left tackle Trent Williams and corner Tracy Porter. Williams couldn’t get a flight out of Houston and Porter missed his flight…
