Kobe Bryant was named Most Likely To Succeed at Lower Merion High School in 1996.

Kobe Bryant graduated from Lower Merion High School in the summer of 1996. The very next year, he played his first NBA season for the Los Angeles Lakers after being a first-round pick in the NBA Draft.

Given the way things turned out for Kobe immediately after high school, it’s not surprising to see that he was voted “Most Likely To Succeed” for the Class of 1996 at Lower Merion:

Voting for the guy who is entering the NBA Draft as the “Most Likely To Succeed” must be as easy as voting for the guy whose hairline is already in the middle of his head as “Most Likely To Go Bald.”

In fairness, everyone who made the obvious choice and voted for Bryant for the yearbook award clearly nailed it (and then some). Since high school he’s won five NBA Championships, earned NBA MVP honors in 2008, been an All-Star 17 times, and has undoubtedly paved his way to the Basketball Hall of Fame.

If there’s one thing I want it’s to talk to a student who didn’t vote for Bryant, just to figure out how he didn’t take one of the most obvious choices in history.
