Monty Williams was told at the beginning of the season that he needed to make the playoffs in order to keep his job. Well make the playoffs, the Pelicans did¹, snatching the eighth seed in a brutally difficult Western Conference. But it wasn’t enough for Williams to keep his job, as he was fired after the Pelicans got swept by the Golden State Warriors.
It didn’t take very long for the Pels to find Williams’ successor, as today it has been reported by USA Today that Alvin Gentry will be the man to oversee Anthony Davis’ ascension to the throne.
"The New Orleans Pelicans have chosen to hire Alvin Gentry as their new head coach, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed to USA TODAY Sports. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the decision had not yet been announced."
Gentry is currently the Warriors’ associate head coach, so he has plenty of experience working with tremendous young talent. Which is good news, because Anthony Davis is young, and has tremendous talent. Congratulations to Mr. Gentry for winning the opportunity to oversee the Anthony Davis era.
It sounds like it’s going to be a lot of fun.
Pels were 27th in pace last season. They chose Gentry because they want to unlock more of an up-and-down style with Anthony Davis and Co.
