The St. Louis Blues could be eying a swap with the New York Rangers that involves Rick Nash and T.J. Oshie.

Both the St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers are entering this offseason with plans to fix whatever went wrong for them in the playoffs this year. It was a season that ended without a trip to the Stanley Cup for two of the NHL’s best teams, including the President’s Trophy winners in the Rangers.

This failure to win is leading to early talks of big shakeups.

According to Larry Brooks from the New York Post, one scenario to watch this offseason could be a trade of Rick Nash to St. Louis and T.J. Oshie to the Rangers.

"But if there is a belief that something more is required, then the Rangers would be wise to look at St. Louis, where coach Ken Hitchcock is an unabashed fan of No. 61, and the Blues are in desperate need of changing their own postseason narrative."

As Brooks hypothesizes, if the Rangers were to ship off Nash to the Blues, then T.J. Oshie would be required as part of a package coming back for one of the NHL’s best forwards.

"In order to make any sense at all for the Rangers … the conversation on a return package would have to feature T.J. Oshie, Jaden Schwartz and Alexander Steen."

That’s a lot for the Rangers to ask for in return for Nash, but it’s a conversation that could be revisited over the offseason. Both the Blues and Rangers entered the postseason as two of the best teams in hockey, but nether reached the Stanley Cup.

For whatever it’s worth, the Rangers came within a game of the Cup Finals, while the Blues were bounced in the first-round by the Minnesota Wild. If the Blues wanted to give up Oshie — something they’d have to have their arm twisted to do — then getting Nash back in return is a great deal.
