The follow-up to New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham’s electrifying rookie season is not off to a great start.
According to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News, Beckham was held out of Giants team drills at OTAs on Monday due to a sore hamstring.
Beckham looked strong in the first three OTA sessions last week before being held out the first day of the second week. New York head coach Tom Coughlin reiterated that Beckham’s hamstring was just sore and the move was precautionary.
Such an injury would normally not be too concerning at this point in the offseason. The intensity level doesn’t really ratchet up until minicamp in two weeks, and Beckham still has over three months to recover in time for the regular season.
However, a sore hamstring raises some red flags when Beckham’s injury history is taken into account. Beckham was severely limited last year during his first offseason in the NFL due to hamstring issues and even missed the first four games of the regular season as a result.
Later, Beckham revealed that he played the entire season with tears in both hamstrings. Coughlin said that this current hamstring soreness was not related to the injury that caused him to miss so much time last year. There’s no indication that this will keep Beckham out for any longer than a day, but any hamstring issue with him is going to raise some concern at this point.
If Beckham did indeed play the entire season with two hamstring tears, it’s hard to imagine what he would look like at full strength. Beckham caught 91 passes for 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns, en route to winning the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award and appearing on highlight reels on a weekly basis.
The Giants need Beckham at full strength to have any shot at competing this season, particularly given their lack of depth at wide receiver while Victor Cruz attempts to return from a patellar tear. NFL fans, apart from those in the NFC East, would also like to see Beckham at his best because he was so fun to watch in 2014.
