The Carolina Panthers and Cam Newton are reportedly nearing a deal for five years worth over $100 million.

Quarterback Cam Newton joined an elite club winning the Heisman Trophy and winning a national championship, and he is about to join an even more exclusive club. According to reports, the Carolina Panthers are in talks with Newton for an extension that will be worth more than $100 million over give years.

That is a lot of money. There have been 20 deals that have passed the $100 million dollar mark in NFL history, 15 of them have been quarterbacks.

The conventional thinking is that Newton has to be getting a deal more along the lines of what Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton received.

Newton hasn’t really had a whole lot of success in the NFL. According to ESPN Stats, his best seasons based on QBR were in 2012 and 2013, and his QBR was 14th both seasons. $100 million is a lot to pay for a quarterback who is statistically in the middle of the pack and has won just a single playoff game.
