The Golden State Warriors had a little fun with new Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry

Alvin Gentry was hired as the new head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans this past weekend, but he’s also preparing as his last run as an assistant with the Golden State Warriors. Gentry is credited with much of the Warriors’ success this season as part of Steve Kerr’s staff.

However, another key to Golden State’s success this season as they prepare for the NBA Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers is the fact that they have never failed to have fun and stay loose. Given Gentry’s new hiring, the Warriors found themselves at an opportune time to do just that.

According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, Gentry walked into a video session with the Warriors ready to get down to business. He had spent all weekend studying the Cavaliers defense and had sent clips of some plays he wanted to focus on to Warriors video guy Nick U’Ren. U’Ren and Kerr had other plans.

From Shelburne’s piece:

"“I start in like, ‘Guys, here are some of the plays we ran against them that really worked well,'” Gentry says. “And I look at the screen and it’s all a bunch of fricking Pelicans highlights.“They’ve got captions under the plays like, ‘Boy, this team has a lot of potential.’ There’s this play with Anthony Davis dunking and the caption says, ‘God, this guy is GOOD!'” …”At the end of the tape, there’s a milk carton with my picture on [it] that says, ‘Have you seen this guy? He’s been missing in action,'” he says."

The last quote was a reference to his absence while he went to New Orleans to finalize the deal, a trip that had Kerr’s blessing.

Everyone clearly got a good laugh out of the rib on Gentry, but it’s also this type of thing that makes this team have a special feel about them.

Not only are we dealing with a team that has the league’s MVP in Stephen Curry and a phenomenal supporting cast around him, but this is a team that legitimately behaves as a brotherhood. They thrive off of their camaraderie, including ribs of basically everyone in the Warriors’ locker room.

Though the fact that a team can joke with one another doesn’t guarantee anything—particularly in the Finals—it certainly can’t hurt the Warriors’ chances as this tight-knit group prepares for battle with Cleveland.
