Griner claims she was “pressured into marriage under duress” and said Johnson made “fraudulent statements,” according to documents filed in Maricopa County (Ariz.) Superior Court, according to USA Today.
The news comes just days after Johnson announced that she is pregnant and will miss the upcoming WNBA season.
Before getting married, the two were both arrested on domestic violence charges in April, which led to a suspension for each by the WNBA, as both were found at fault. Nonetheless, the two got married three weeks later. Now, four weeks after that, things have changed yet again.
Griner addressed the situation in a statement:
"“Last Wednesday, Glory and I agreed to either legally separate, get divorced, or annul our marriage. I can confirm that today I filed for an annulment. In the week prior to the wedding, I attempted to postpone the wedding several times until I completed counseling, but I still went through with it. I now realize that was a mistake.”"
Griner is one of the WNBA’s most recognizable players, a center and former Baylor player who remains the only NCAA basketball player (men’s or women’s) ever to score 2,000 points and block 500 shots. She is a member of the US Women’s National Team and a 2014 WNBA champion with the Mercury.
Johnson, a 6-foot-3 forward, is a two-time WNBA All-Star and was tied for the league’s third-best rebounder last season.
This could be an interesting situation on the court; I doubt there’s a single professional sport that has ever had a divorced couple playing in the league at the same time. I mean, things with Shaq and Kobe were bad, but they never had to get a court involved.
In an interview with SI.com on April 17, 2013, Griner publicly came out as lesbian, becoming one of the first major athletes to do so. She works actively with pro-LGBT causes.
In another twist, Johnson claims that she isn’t a lesbian at all, telling the New York Times that “I’m not a lesbian. But Brittney is different.”
This is seriously like a true-to-form Lifetime movie.
