Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa records first MLB hit
By Len Nunes
Carlos Correa collected his first MLB hit in his first MLB game.
On Sunday night, the Houston Astros called up their top prospect, shortstop Carlos Correa. The MLB.com prospect rankings have Carlos Correa ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the league. So you would expect a hit in his first game right?
The magical moment for Correa happened in top of the 4th inning with Jonathan Villar on third base and Jose Altuve on second. Chicago White Sox ace Chris Sale had just struck out Evan Gattis and Chris Carter prior to throwing a first pitch ball to Correa. On the second pitch, Correa knocked it to the shortstop and legged out an infield single (recording an RBI in the process). Boom goes the dynamite seems like the wrong phase to describe the milestone hit, but when he’s telling his grandkids all that matters is that it was the first of many hits to come.
Correa was originally called out on the slow roller to Chicago White Sox shortstop Alexei Ramirez. However, it went to review and before the umpires were done looking the play even the White Sox radio announcers were awarding the hit.
The 2015 season has also included the first major league hits of two other uber-prospects.
Kris Bryant: Facing San Diego’s Tyson Ross, Bryant barely poked a ball out of the infield for a single and advanced to the second base on the throw.
Joey Gallo: facing the Chicago’s Jeff Samardzija, a sharply hit ball handcuffed Sox first baseman Adam LaRoche and went into the outfield.
