See Twitter reactions to the release of Eagles guard Evan Mathis
An offseason of drama between the Philadelphia Eagles and Pro Bowl guard Evan Mathis came to a head Thursday, as the team has elected to release Mathis. It’s a surprising move to go for the release rather than a trade, and one that creates a sizable hole in the team’s already somewhat shaky offensive line.

Relations between Mathis and the team were strained, to say the least; Mathis was angling for a pay raise, one which the team clearly was not interested in paying him. It’s not surprising that he’ll end up on another team, but it is a surprise to see the Eagles get nothing in return for him.
So what did Twitter users think of the move? Well, it’s safe to say that few thought it was a good one from the increasingly baffling Chip Kelly. Let’s take a look:
That’s cold.
Evan Mathis was our top graded OG from 2011-13, and was 2nd last year in just 9 games. Best OG in the game now available. #OnYourMarks

Plenty made cracks about LeSean McCoy’s assertion that Chip Kelly is “getting rid of all the good black players.”
Fans of pretty much every other team seem to want Mathis to come to town, particularly the Dolphins:

And Mathis himself used Twitter to deliver a classy goodbye to his fans:
Thanks for the memories Philly.
