Paul Heyman wanted CM Punk to end the Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak

Paul Heyman admits something that we all thought might have been true in the first place a few years ago

Paul Heyman recently made an appearance on Chael Sonnen’s podcast, and he made a revelation that was a bit eye-opening. It had to do with the Undertaker’s vaunted WrestleMania winning streak that came to an end at WrestleMania 30 at the hands of his client, Brock Lesnar.

You see, the thing is, if it were up to Heyman, Lesnar would not have been the guy of his to accomplish that impossible feat. No, if it were up to Heyman, CM Punk would have ended the streak a year earlier at WrestleMania 29 in New Jersey.

Heyman was of the belief that if Punk had gotten the win over the Undertaker on that stage, then he might not have ended up leaving WWE.

"“I actually pitched it for Punk because I thought it was the only thing that was going to keep Punk from eventually leaving WWE. Even before that match, he was itching to get out.”"

Punk and Undertaker put on what was arguably the best match of the night at that particular event, and at times there were some that believed Punk would be coming out with the win. In a world where kayfabe is dead, they did a really good job of making us think that Punk had a chance to come out of that with the historical win.

Of course, in the end it was the Undertaker who remained undefeated on the big stage at 21-0.

Now as for Heyman’s theory that Punk’s WWE future may have been altered with a win in that match, he might not be wrong about that. We see the momentum that the win gave Lesnar throughout the summer last year, and there’s no telling how much the creative direction for Punk would have changed after that. Could there have been a few more WWE title runs in his future?

We’ll never know the answer to that question, but it’s certainly interesting to find out who Heyman wanted to take the win from the Undertaker to begin with.
