The day before Michael Sam’s career was to start in the CFL, Sam’s has left the club and possibly jeopardized any chance of ever making the NFL.

The Canadian Football League has been credited for starting and/or resurrecting many National Football League player’s careers. On May 22nd, Michael Sam signed a contract with the Montreal Alouettes to begin that journey back to a league that already shunned not one but twice.

The 7th round draft pick of the St. Louis Rams, and drinker of a cup of coffee with the Dallas Cowboys, Michael Sam has left the Montreal Alouettes camp. The shocking move comes just 21 days into his CFL tenure.

The dagger here is that it is the day before Sam was scheduled to play in his first game. Instead of Michael Sam highlights, we get to view a piece of the permission slip allowing him to go home.

All reports surrounding Michael Sam suggest that he has been ill the past couple days. Reports also suggest that Sam has been struggling with his transition into the Canadian game. Sam’s time with the Alouettes has been pre-dominantly spent with the backup squad to help ease the learning curve.

Could Michael Sam legitimately going home because he is sick and needs family time? Sure.

Could Michael Sam be going home because the harsh reality is that the CFL game has proven to be as complex to learn as the NFL? Ding ding ding, we have a winner.

The sincere hope is that Michael Sam is healthy and does return to the Montreal Alouettes camp. Sam is only 25 years old, if this was the last we saw of him play in 2015, he surely will get another opportunity in football if he so desires. The question now becomes, does Michael Sam have enough desire?
