Kansas City Chiefs Preview

The Chiefs had a 9-7 record while finishing last season 2nd in the AFC West. The Chiefs added Jeremy Maclin this off-season to bolster their wide receiver corps, and they will be leaning on stud running back Jamaal Charles for a lot of their production.

Quarterback

Alex Smith

Smith finished last season ranked 19th among QBs in fantasy production with 297.65 fantasy points on the year, while averaging 19.84 fantasy points per game. Smith only had 1 game where he scored less than 10 fantasy points and he had 6 games where he scored 20 or more fantasy points. Smith didn’t throw a TD pass to any of his receivers last season, and he only had 1 game where he was a complete bust. Smith is the ultimate late round quarterback. His floor is insulated due to his rushing ability, and he has the ceiling to score 30 points during any given week. Smith is going to be a solid stream this year if he’s on the waiver wire when he’s facing a favorable match up.

Running Back

Jamaal Charles

Charles finished last season ranked 7th among running backs in fantasy output with 253.40 fantasy points on the year while averaging 16.89 points per game. Charles had 10 games where he scored 10 points or more, and he had 6 games where he scored 20 or more fantasy points. Charles is a stud running back, and the only way he will be a bust this season is if he were to get injured. Injuries are something you can’t predict, so don’t be afraid to draft Charles.

Knile Davis

Davis scored 121 fantasy points last season, and he was very valuable when Charles was out due to injuries last season. Davis is most valuable as a handcuff to Charles, but he’s not going to be productive for your team unless Jamaal Charles was to go down with an injury.

Wide Receiver

Jeremy Maclin

Maclin signed with the Chiefs during the offseason. Maclin ranked 9th among wide receivers with 293.30 fantasy points last season with the Philadelphia Eagles, and averaged 18.33 a game. He had 13 games where he scored 10 fantasy points or more, and he had 5 games where he scored 20 fantasy points or more. Obviously, Maclin’s fantasy value will take a little bit of a hit this season, but he’s still going to be fantasy relevant providing WR2 numbers with the upside of being a WR1 during some weeks. Maclin is an excellent route runner, and he’s going to soak up a lot of targets underneath the coverage. He is going to be a great value in PPR leagues since the Chiefs like short passing routes.

Chris Conley

Conley is a highly athletic rookie wide receiver that you need to add to your watch list. The odds are against him this season, but he’s athletic enough that he could carve out a role as a rookie.

Albert Wilson

Wilson isn’t a prospect you would consider drafting in redraft leagues, but he is another name to add on your watch list because he may have some value in PPR leagues in the middle of the season.

Tight End

Travis Kelce

Kelce finished last season ranked 6th with 183.20 fantasy points among tight ends, while averaging 11.45 fantasy points a game. Kelce had 7 games last year where he scored 10 fantasy points or more, and he had 1 game where he scored more than 20 fantasy points. Kelce is highly likely to finish in the top-10 again this year, and he will have the upside to finish the season in the top-5. Kelce is a young tight end, and he’s only going to develop and produce even more productive in fantasy going forward.

Defense/Special Teams

The Chiefs DST ranked 15th last year scoring 106 fantasy points (ESPN Standard Scoring). The Chiefs had 3 games where they scored 10 points or more. I don’t recommend drafting the Chiefs this year in fantasy, but like most defenses they will be streamable during weeks when they have a favorable matchup.
