Michael Sam abruptly left the Montreal Alouttes last week and the team has subsequently suspended him for blowing off practice.

People have called Michael Sam a lot of things in his time since coming out as openly gay and announcing his intentions to play in the NFL. Among those criticisms is that he’s not really in it for the football but rather the attention of being an openly gay athlete.

Mouth breathers like that, who have found a way to separate their brains from the rest of their body without death occurring, are the problem — no Michael Sam. But Sam has other problems to worry about as his career is in jeopardy after he blew off practice in with the Montreal Alouttes and has been suspended as a result.

You can expect a text message from your overly obsessed friend in a minute gloating, as though this somehow makes his or her life life any less depressing.

According to the Montreal Gazette, the Alouttes front office is shocked that Sam went home last Friday and didn’t return. That being said, the team’s GM is confident that Sam will return since that’s the reason he came to the CFL.

"“There’s nothing to tell you. He wanted to go home, and that’s what he did. I don’t know why. When a guy wants to go home, they go home. He had some personal things to take care of. I wouldn’t be surprised if he returns. I’m surprised he left. I was very surprised. If he doesn’t come back, I would think football’s over for him. He’s the one that has to face that. But I don’t think he doesn’t want to play football. That’s why he came here.”"

If Sam doesn’t commit to playing with Montreal, then his football career is over. That’s the plain and simple truth, as this goes beyond sexual orientation that didn’t matter in the first place and is all about character concerns that are relevant to his playing career.

Michael Sam has long been defended by those saying it only matter what he does on the football — which is very true. But this is a football issue, and Sam needs to find a way to get it together sooner rather than later.
