In maybe one of the weirdest stories that we’ll see in baseball maybe for the next decade, the St. Louis Cardinals are under investigation by the FBI and the United States government, according to a report from the New York Times. Apparently, people withing the Cardinals organization actually hacked into the database of the Houston Astros to steal vital player personnel information.

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred had this brief statement to issue on the matter.

"Major League Baseball “has been aware of and has fully cooperated with the federal investigation into the illegal breach of the Astros’ baseball operations database.”"

This is not something that you hear of every day, but this is a pretty serious situation that Major League Baseball has on their hands at the moment. Many will more than likely compare this to the New England Patriots and SpyGate, but in reality, this takes this to a whole other level. Hacking into a team’s database to get information goes a lot further than spying on some practices.

A lot of other people are shocked at the fact that this is the St. Louis Cardinals under the microscope of the FBI and the US Government. This is one of the more respected organizations not just in baseball, but in all of sports. This is pretty much like finding out that your straight-A student robbed a bank with his buddies.

Another aspect of this is that it’s not surprising that the Astros were the ones that were hacked for info. One of the best teams in baseball at the moment, the front office in Houston is clearly doing some things correctly, so you can’t be surprised that someone would want some info on their process. But again, you’d never expect the Cardinals.

This will be pretty interesting to watch play out as time goes on with this investigation.
