Jonathan Bernier’s fiancé suggests time in Toronto is over
By Len Nunes
The Toronto Maple Leafs’ contract talks with goaltender Jonathan Bernier just got more awkward thanks to his fiancé Martin Forget
Jonathan Bernier and the Toronto Maple Leafs have failed to make the post-season in his two seasons guarding their net. According to Bernier’s lovely fiancée, Martine Forget, it seems the Toronto Maple Leafs have already decided that her soon-to-be hubby will not be the guy leading them back to the promised land.
Seems like an innocent picture of Forget’s and Bernier’s son, right? Here’s a picture of their son on his nine-month birthday.
Did you spot the difference? The Toronto Maple Leaf logos are visibly hidden in the updated picture.
One of Martine Forget’s Instagram followers noticed and asked the following question, which lead to a very interesting answer:
"He’s so cute but how come no Leafs in this one? It’s for a reason but I can’t tell anyone now"
Bernier’s two-year, $5.8-million US deal expires in a couple of weeks, but he is a year away from being a UFA. Are Bernier and his agent Pat Brisson looking to sign a one-year deal to get him to UFA status or does Bernier want to sign a multi-year deal?
Statistically, the soon to be 27-year-old Jonathan Bernier had his worst season in 2014-15, posting a 2.87 GAA and .912 save percentage.
The Maple Leafs currently still do not have a General Manager; team President Brendan Shanahan has been making the major decisions. Did Shanahan see something in Bernier last season that turned him off the idea of re-signing him?
Is this just Forget stirring the pot a mere week away from the NHL Draft? Maybe hold off on buying your Maple Leafs No. 45 Bernier jersey, despite the following tweet from Pierre LeBrun.
