The Chicago Blackhawks are Stanley Cup champions, but they may have to unload some players like Patrick Sharp who are expensive and without a place anymore.

After winning their first of three Stanley Cups back in 2010, the Chicago Blackhawks had to immediately pivot from celebrating in the streets of downtown Chicago to dealing with the inevitable fact that not everyone would be able to come back the next season.

That was the case again in 2013 when Chicago again won the Stanley Cup and it’s going to happen once more now that they’ve won’t he Cup for a third time in six years. Patrick Sharp could be the odd man out this summer, just the same way guys like Ray Emery and Michael Frolik have been outcast due to the salary cap.

According to ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun, the Washington Capitals might land Patrick Sharp this summer if the Blackhawks feel they need to unload him.

"“I think the Washington Capitals are a team that I see as a fit for him – among the many – but I think they would like to add a top-6 player there and a guy that’s won. We know what the Caps’ issues are, right? So that would be an interesting fit for me. But who knows?"

The reason for Sharp being on the block, potentially, is the presence of Brendan Saad and Teuvo Teravainen and their rising stardom. Saad is already one of the best at his position and Teravainen is a young star on the rise who could be the future of the Blackhawks.

Sharp is due over $10 million over the next two seasons, and with the Capitals lacking star power to put alongside Alex Ovechkin, this could be a deal the Blackhawks make before the draft and acquire some picks to play with moving forward.
